Newt Gingrich has become the latest GOP candidate to sign the NOM pledge! Ron Paul is now the only one who has not signed it.
NOM, the National Organization for Marriage, is a group of people whose heads will explode should a gay person get married. Their pledge says the following:
NOM’s marriage pledge commits the candidates to:
- Support an amendment to the United State Constitution defining marriage as the union of one man and one woman;
- Appointing Supreme Court Justices and an Attorney General who will apply the original meaning of the Constitution;
- Vigorously defend the federal Defense of Marriage Act in court;
- Establish a presidential commission on religious liberty; and
- Advance legislation to return to the people of the District of Columbia their right to vote on marriage.
I would like to remind ALL the presidential candidates that they may find themselves in a situation where they will have to swear the following oath:
“I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully execute the Office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my Ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States.”
If you guessed that was from Article 2, Section 1 of the United States Constitution, you would be correct! You know what that oath forgot to mention? Taking rights away from gay people.
For a presidential candidate, that is the ONLY oath or pledge that matters. NOM, ATR, and all these other pledge groups are irrelevant.
