As if on cue:
“I will go to the NAACP convention, and explain to the African-American community why they should demand paychecks instead of food stamps.” – Newt Gingrich
The NAACP’s reply (emphasis mine):
“It is a shame that the former Speaker feels that these types of inaccurate, divisive statements are in any way helpful to our country,” said Jealous. “The majority of people using food stamps are not African-American, and most people using food stamps have a job.”
…
“We invited Speaker Gingrich to attend our annual convention several times when he was Speaker of the House, but he declined to join us,” Jealous continued. “If he is invited again, I hope that he would come, with the intention to unite rather than divide.”“Gingrich’s statement is problematic on several fronts, most importantly because he gets his facts wrong.”
Same tired old “poor people are lazy” argument. As I stated yesterday:
Take the SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, ie foodstamps) benefit for example. In Pennsylvania, the maximum benefit a family of 4 can receive is $668.00 / month, or $8,016.00 / year. Thats about 22 dollars per day, $5.50 per family member. Perhaps there are some folks out there who are so extraordinarily lazy that less than 6 dollars a day would be enough to incentivize them to not work, but they would be an incredibly tiny minority.
Gingrich is remarkably good at putting his foot in his mouth. There was an interesting post on the Dish about Gingrich and his tendency to say these sorts of hateful, ignorant, racisty things. I thought it was kind of interesting!
