Matt Yglesias has an interesting article in Slate describing Chipotle’s innovation in the improvement of fast food quality, comparing it to Apple’s iPhone:
In many ways, the Chipotle burrito is very similar to the iPhone. Founder Steve Ells invented a way to maintain the basic speed and experience of the standard fast-food experience and make the quality of the food a little better.* The better food costs a bit more money, but consumers turn out to be happy to pay a premium for a superior product.
But of course, the burrito hipsters are offended that Yglesias would have anything nice to say about a chain:
Disgusting food advocate Matthew Yglesiashas a story in Slate that makes the case that “in many ways, the Chipotle burrito is very similar to the iPhone.” Which would be true, if iPhones were completely disgusting.
Now, I will forgive Yglesias, because he does not live in San Francisco, and so perhaps he has never had a good burrito. And of course, it is very possible that he has never used or seen an iPhone. However, were both of those conditions met, he would know that the Chipotle burrito is nothing like an iPhone. I actually think it is incredibly likely that he has never had a real burrito, or seen an iPhone.
Seriously? There are burrito hipsters now? Ugh.
