TPM highlights a couple of Romney surrogates saying the following today, on a press conference call on foreign policy (emphasis TPM’s):
- “We’re seeing the Soviets pushing into the Arctic with no response from us. In fact, the only response is to announce the early retirement of the last remaining icebreaker.”
- “You know, Russia is another example where we give and Russia gets and we get nothing in return,” Prosper said. “The United States abandoned its missile defense sites in Poland and Czechoslovakia, yet Russia does nothing but obstruct us, or efforts in Iran and Syria.”
Neither Czechoslovakia nor the Soviet Union have existed for 20 years.
Also, too, note that this was a conference call with reporters. These guys planned this in advance. They were probably sitting in their offices, looking at their notes. I could perhaps look past this if it were a slip up in unplanned remarks that was subsequently corrected. But it wasn’t.
These guys would fail highschool geography, and they’re former administration officials, an ambassador and a Secretary of the Navy!
This isn’t quite to the Uzbekibekibekistan level, but it’s getting there.
