An Olympic Tax Break

Are you fucking kidding me:

President Obama believes that awards and medals won by Olympic athletes should be exempt from income taxes, White House press secretary Jay Carney said on Monday.

The move means Obama would back legislation by Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) that would exempt the athletes’ winnings, which award $25,000 for a gold medal, $15,000 for a silver medal and $10,000 for a bronze medal.

Look, I honestly couldn’t care less whether or not Olympic prizes are taxed. Republicans (and a lot of dems) have spent the past 2 years bitching about how complex the tax code is and about all the special exemptions targeted at whatever interest group but now they all want to come together to add another special exemption? The real kicker is that this is what congress is doing right now? We currently don’t have a federal budget, half of our economic policy is up in the air, oh and unemployment is still really high. But yea, a small tax cut for Micheal Phelps is totally the most important thing to do right now.

And the amazing part is that Rubio was probably inspired to this by that asanine Fox News story about how the olympians would throw their matches / events to avoid taxes. (for more Fox fun, note that after Gabby Douglas became the best gymnast in the world, all Fox could come up with to say was to question her patriotism because there weren’t enough stars on her leotard).

This is becoming one of those weeks that makes me want to throw thugs every time I read the news. There’s just so much stupid.

Edit: This is becoming one of those weeks that makes me want to throw things, not thugs. Throwing thugs would be exceedingly difficult and would likely end badly for me.
